Hispanic Heritage

October also was the month for the Hispanic Heritage Night for our ward. The primary was assigned three performances for the dinner. Three!!! I knew some of the girls in the primary would like to do a dancing performance. We decided on Danza Kuduro by Don Omar which is a very common song used for Zumba. On our first practice only one primary boy came and was embarrassed to be dancing with all the girls from the primary. So since he made the effort of coming to the dance practice I promised him I would make a "boy only" dance. Trying different songs and using the boys overwhelming energy we decided to do Gangnam Style. Even though it does not really have nothing to do with the Hispanic culture I decided it was more important for the boys to participate and be
acknowledged for their willingness to dance! For the third performance I opted for a more simple idea. I had the song Mi Tierra by Gloria Estefan play while all the kids including the nursery kids walked around, somewhat like a parade with the older kids waving huge flags of the different
countries.

When the time finally came to perform all the girls and boys were so nervous. (mostly the girls) but nevertheless they did a fantastic job! I felt this overwhelming joy seeing them perform and have fun while doing it. It was worth all the craziness, one encounters with children (and their attention span). Everyone loved the performances! They made me so proud!!! Many parents approached me to tell me how great it was, but my favorite comments were of those parents that were thankful that I made their child dance and have fun! They couldn’t believe that their shy child was up there dancing. That to me was gratifying. It didn’t matter all the time I dedicated, all the patience I endured and all the crazy practices we had it was ALL worth it. I love my Primary!

  1. I think the fact that the boys did Gangham Style is awesome even if it doesn't have anything to do with Hispanic Heritage!
