I have come to realize every race has a story. This race made me realize not only what a special running partner I had but also what an amazing life long partner I have. For the 10 miler race was Jonathan first long distance race. He was super ecstatic so was but I also had many concerns about thefollowing few days (our vacation and family reunion/ wedding). So I had alot on my plate! Hence I did not train properly and relayed on that I had
done this before and even ran a longer distance. Jonathan however trained hard!
Before the race started I tried to convince Jonathan to run on his own because he could run the entire 10 miles non stop and he was such a quickrunner! I knew I would slow him down. However he did not budge.
So we started the race and of course I started to run like speedy Gonzalez. Knowing that that RUN Disney coordinates announces over the speakers several times to slow down your regular pace because of the heat and humidity it was actually dangerous to run fast. This was not the race to PR. They repeated that advisory over and over. But of course in the moment of excitement I disregard the warnings. Luckily I had Jonathan to tell me to slow down, to keep a good pace!
The whole race I had a guilty feeling of slowing Jonathan down I knew he could run way faster than what he was running. Then he told me what his grandfather once told him “alone you can make it faster, together you can make it further” those words made me realize it’s about doing this together and love my hubby even more. After that I started to enjoy the race and all the spooky yet magical things Disney had place on the trail. We even ran through a bone- grave yard! During the whole race Jonathan kept and encouraging me and reassuring me there was no where else he wanted to be than running by my side. With him on my side I enjoyed this race even more!
We ran as Princess Leia and Han Solo which where Jonathan’s costume of choice. Since it was his first long distance race I figured he should have the honor! Lol The costumes were very simple to make (or maybe I am just getting the hang of this). The belts were a little more complex because I decided to incorporate lights since this was a night race! That was challenging but so worth it! We actually received a lot of compliments at the race for our costumes. It was fun to also see other runners’ costumes and there were way more scary ones and different ones than the Princess Half.
When we finally crossed the finish line I realized my lack of training had really took a toll on my endurance. I did not have the proper training that I wished and the climate was also not in my favor. Now I know I can not solely relay on something I have done in the past, for every new race I need to train correctly (no shortcuts). Even though there are some factors you can’t control, having a constant partner on your side makes everything better. I couldn’t have chosen a better partner.
